As we stand on the brink of another presidential election, the political landscape seems more fractured than ever before. The air is thick with tension, and the chasms that divide us appear to have widened into seemingly unbridgeable gulfs. Partisan rhetoric echoes through our communities, social media feeds, and even our places of worship.
Yet, amid this tumultuous climate, we, as Christians, are reminded of our higher calling. Our faith beckons us to rise above the fray and embody a standard that transcends political boundaries—a standard rooted in the very essence of Christ’s teachings. We are called to be beacons of love in a sea of hostility, showing kindness in an atmosphere of criticism and being examples of respect in a world quick to dismiss and degrade.
This calling isn’t conditional on someone’s political leanings. It doesn’t waver based on whether someone votes red or blue, conservative or liberal. Instead, it’s a universal mandate that binds us all, compelling us to treat every individual – regardless of their political affiliations – with the dignity and worth inherent in being created in God’s image.
So, how do we live out this lofty ideal, especially when political discussions can quickly become heated? How do we maintain our Christian witness when the temptation to engage in partisan mudslinging is so strong? And how can we navigate the complexities of civic engagement while still holding fast to our primary identity as followers of Christ?
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you” – Ephesians 4:32.
Let’s explore the scriptures as a reminder of our calling to love our neighbors – even those with opposing viewpoints. May we consider how our actions during this election season can serve as a powerful testimony to the Gospel’s transformative power.
While we could mock candidates based on party affiliation, instead, why don’t we earnestly seek to understand their policies and qualifications?
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” – 1 Samuel 16:7.
While we could unfriend those with different views, instead, why don’t we recognize the power of respectful dialogue? It’s within our ability to engage in conversations that bridge divides and foster understanding.
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” – Romans 12:18.
While we could assume the worst about those with opposing views, instead, why don’t we try to understand their perspectives? By doing so, we can cultivate empathy and a more open-minded approach to political discourse.
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry” – James 1:19.
While we could use harsh language, label people with differing viewpoints, or share inflammatory memes on social media, instead, why don’t we speak with gentleness and respect?
Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone” – Colossians 4:6.
While we could spread rumors, unverified claims, and half-truths, instead, why don’t we diligently fact-check before sharing information? Remember, a half-truth is a whole lie.
The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered – Proverbs 17:27.
While we could demonize the other party, instead, why don’t we acknowledge that no political party perfectly aligns with God’s kingdom?
Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save” – Psalm 146:3.
While we could let politics consume us, instead, why don’t we remember our primary citizenship is in Heaven?
But our citizenship is in Heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” – Philippians 3:20.
Let us remember that our ultimate allegiance is not to any political party or candidate, but to the Kingdom of God. In a world desperate for healing and unity, we have the opportunity – and the responsibility – to be instruments of God’s love, ambassadors of His kindness, and living examples of the respect and dignity every human deserves.
May we step forward with courage and compassion, ready to be the salt and light our nation desperately needs in this crucial time. The unifying power of Christ’s love can shine the brightest, even in moments of great division.
By this, everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another” – John 13:35.
