Jesus and His disciples travel to Capernaum where He will continue to battle Satan. And the battleground, of all places, will be in a house of worship. As Jesus arrives and begins in the synagogue on the Sabbath day, the people are “astounded at His teaching, for He taught them as One having authority.”
What authority did the people see in Jesus that they did not see in the other teachers? Jesus’ motives and actions were in perfect harmony.
Jewish teachers often quoted well-known Rabbi’s interpretation of scripture. Jesus didn’t need to do that. He knew scripture. He had “self-authenticating authority,” because when you saw Jesus, you saw God.
