Commonly, success is perceived as amassing wealth, occupying prestigious roles, or garnering numerous accolades. However, from a Christian perspective, a “calling” offers a refreshingly deep and purposeful narrative. It transcends the idea of a mere job or career, pointing us toward God’s unique purpose for our lives. This mission inspires our daily existence with meaning, direction, and fulfillment.
But what exactly is a calling? At its core, a calling is an invitation from God to engage in the work He has personalized for us. It’s a divine nudge towards roles and responsibilities aligning with our spiritual gifts, talents, and passions, serving God’s Kingdom and His creation. Unlike secular views of career advancement, a calling isn’t about climbing the societal ladder but about descending into the service of others in the name of Christ.
Understanding our calling requires a shift in perspective. In writing to the church in Ephesus, Paul reveals:
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago” – Ephesians 2:10.
This passage illuminates the idea that each of us has been uniquely crafted by God, not to pursue our independent ambitions but to fulfill the good works He has set before us. These works are not just tasks but are instilled with eternal significance, intricately woven into the fabric of God’s overarching plan for humanity.
Discovering our calling is seldom a lightning-bolt moment of clarity. Instead, it’s an adventurous journey, often marked by periods of seeking, waiting, and gradual revelation.
The Psalmist’s advice in Psalm 37:4, “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart,” suggests that an intimate relationship with God—a heart deeply in tune with His— is foundational in uncovering our calling. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, prayer, and fellowship with other believers, our spiritual ears become attuned to the whispers of God’s guidance.
Understanding our calling also involves recognizing the distinction between our job and calling. Every believer is called to make the love and truth of Christ apparent, irrespective of their professional field. Whether you’re a teacher, mechanic, nurse, or stay-at-home parent, every context presents a unique opportunity to shine the light of Jesus, showcasing the fruits of the Spirit in daily encounters and tasks.
Yet, pursuing our calling is not always without its challenges. Doubt, fear, and insecurity can loom large, and external opposition or misunderstanding from others can accompany steps taken in faith. Herein, the biblical account of Moses is incredibly encouraging. Called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses was worried by insecurities about his abilities and the enormity of the task ahead. God’s response to Moses in Exodus 4:12, “I will be with you,” is a powerful reminder that we are in the company of God’s faithful presence in pursuing our calling. His strength is perfected in our weakness.
We must remember that living out our calling is inherently linked with serving others. Jesus Himself, in Mark 10:45, states, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” Our calling is not to draw attention to ourselves but instead for the improvement of others and the glory of God. In giving our lives for others, we find them, fulfilling the paradox Jesus speaks of:
If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for My sake, you will save it” – Matthew 16:25.
Pursuing our calling is a lifelong endeavor, evolving as we grow in faith and stage of life. It requires patience, obedience, and a heart willing to be molded and used by God. But the joy and fulfillment derived from living out one’s calling are incomparable. Each step taken in faith, service rendered, and spoken word of truth contributes to God’s Kingdom and deepens our relationship with Him.
By giving our all to our calling, we align our hearts and actions with God’s divine purpose, discovering a profound sense of belonging and purpose. May we be encouraged to seek, discern, and relentlessly pursue God’s calling. In doing so, we find our life’s true meaning and fulfillment as we aim to contribute immeasurably to God’s redemptive work.
