The Gift of Laughter and Joy

The Gift of Laughter and Joy

Laughter and joyful happiness have many great benefits; they are integral to life. Besides the physical and emotional benefits, happiness can help us build resilience and boost our mood by allowing us to stay positive in challenging situations. When we laugh, it can help us see the lighter side of life by encouraging us to approach life positively. Living a joyful life even helps us think more creatively.

While laughter and joy are two of the most treasured expressions of human emotion, did you know that the Bible encourages us to find happiness and laughter in the Lord? Biblical joy comes from God, while other forms of humor come from earthly sources. Biblical laughter is not based on selfish desires but is an overflow of joy. It is a joy that is not fleeting but a lasting, deep-seated joy rooted in faith and hope.

When we choose (and yes, like most things in this life, it is a choice) to laugh and find joy in the Lord, by doing so, we are acknowledging God’s goodness, faithfulness, and love.

“When the Lord returned his exiles to Jerusalem, it was like a dream! We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. We were the talk of the nations!” – Psalm 126:1-2.

Think of laughter and joy as essential components of a life of faith. Through it, we can glorify God, be thankful for His blessings, and strengthen our relationships with Him and others (Mark 12:28-31). Our joy reminds us of our trust in God and His promises. Despite any current circumstance, we can have hope and resilience.

When King David made a terrible decision that brought great shame to him and his family and even the nation of Israel, he quickly asked for the Lord’s forgiveness by praying, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation” (Psalm 51:12). David recognized that a relationship with God is supposed to fill you with happiness and joy.

Many years ago, one of my seminary professors made an interesting observation. He said, “Have you ever stood outside the church and watched people enter? Most people will be joyful, laughing with those around them, with smiles on their faces. But there are always certain people who enter the church that have the same look on their faces as if they are going to the dentist for a root canal. You can’t tell the difference.”

Friends, I believe that laughter and joy are gifts that demonstrate our faith and our trust in God. Again, these gifts empower us to confront life’s challenges with optimism and strength of character and mind. I also believe that Jesus loved to laugh. Think about it. Jesus was invited to a lot of dinners and festive events!

“Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, all you who obey him! Shout for joy, all you whose hearts are pure!” – Psalm 32:11.

When we laugh and find joyful happiness in the Lord, we acknowledge His goodness, faithfulness, and love. It is a reminder to be thankful for the good things God gives us and to celebrate the gift of laughter and joy He has brought into our lives.
