God’s protection is a recurring biblical theme that applies to our lives. His presence should bring comfort, reminding us that God is ever-present, guarding, guiding, and watching over our lives.
In today’s hectic world, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. We encounter challenges and uncertainties at every turn. In times like these, finding comfort and reassurance is crucial, and there is no better source of solace than the unwavering protection of God.
The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand” – Psalm 121:5.
The comparison of God’s protection to shade is remarkably profound. The relief experienced when one steps into the shade during a hot summer day is universally understood. The shade does not alter the external temperature but has a cooling effect, making it bearable. That is the impact God’s grace can have on our lives. While He may not always remove us from difficult circumstances, God serves as a shield against life’s harsh realities. He provides a sanctuary where we can uncover peace and fortitude. He remains steadfast through all our challenges, uncertainties, exhaustion, and exasperation.
Here are a few biblical examples that can be applied today, demonstrating God’s protection in our everyday lives.
The Unseen Protection: Just as God protected Daniel in the lion’s den (Daniel 6), His unseen protection is in motion daily. While we may not be in a cave with lions, there are hazards and troubles in various forms surrounding us. These could be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Knowing that God is attentive to our cries and delivers us from emotional turmoil can provide immense comfort and peace.
Enduring Trials: We see parallels in our modern world from the example of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3). The figurative fires we experience today might be financial difficulties, family disputes, health problems, or work-related stress. Even in these blazing trials, God’s protection is ever present, helping us to emerge secure and stronger.
Protection Amidst Corruption: Taking a cue from Noah’s story (Genesis 6-9), God’s protection sometimes calls for us to stand apart and be different. In a society often plagued by corruption, deceit, and injustice, it can feel like we are building an ark in the middle of a desert. However, God protects our integrity and righteousness, even when the world is in a moral flood.
The Calming of Life’s Storms: In the story of Jesus calming the storm (Mark 4:35-41), His disciples were filled with fear. Similarly, we often face “storms” in our lives that fill us with fear and anxiety. These storms could be loss, illness, or uncertainty about the future. However, just as Jesus calmed the storm and brought peace, He can calm our storms and bring peace to our lives.
Constant Watchfulness: The writer of Psalm 121 assures us that God’s protection is ongoing.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and always” – Psalm 121:7-8.
This protection is not limited to specific situations; it also extends to the routines of our everyday life. God is constantly watching over us. Moreover, while God’s protection is not always dramatic or immediately visible, it is as sure as the sun rising every morning. Let us take this comfort with us every day, for God’s promise of protection is steadfast and eternal.
